How can I pick a tour that suits my fitness level?

Our tours are divided into five different categories:

1. Easy - You want to try it just for fun and to be active some of the days. No previous experience required.

2. Beginner - You have some biking or hiking experience but you are a weekend warrior. Generally half-day itineraries.

3. Intermediate - You exercise regularly. Routes take about 6 to 8 hours to complete. When hiking you are used to a full day exercise, with a total accumulated climbing of fewer than 1000 m/3300 ft.

4. Sporty - You like to walk or ride hard.

5. Advanced - You are in a very good shape. You have no problem in riding a bike for 100km (62mi) or more. On a mountain bike, you can deal with technical sections and face steep and long climbs. Walking with a 60-70 L backpack all day long while climbing more than 1000 m/3300 ft is a piece of cake.

What kind of accommodations should I expect?

We offer five levels of accommodations:

A - Luxury - 4-5 star inns or/and boutique charming hotels

B - Selected - 4-star inns, farms or/and manor houses

C - Comfort- 3-4 star inns or/and mid-scale properties

D - Value - 2-3 stars or/and casual inns

E - Budget - camping, B&B or/and huts

How will our guides provide support on the routes?

On supported tours one guide drives the support van, sweeping the route several times during the day. On the guided tours another guide will be walking or biking with the group, making sure that everyone is having a good time!

On Mountain Bike and Walking tours, the group will meet the support van in certain points, whenever possible, depending on the route.

Do I have to ride with the group?

Not really. You can choose your own pace and have fun. It's not a bike race. We will provide you very accurate route directions so you won't get lost.

In the Trekking and Mountain Biking expeditions, we recommended that the group stays together as we will normally be traveling in remote locations.

Do I have to carry my own luggage or gear?

No. All luggage transfers between inns are assured by us.

Only on some expedition trips (trekking and mountain biking),  you might need to carry your own gear.

How large are the groups?

On our Bike and Walking Tours, the group size varies between 4 and 16 participants.

On self-guided tours, the minimum is two participants.

We can run a tour for smaller groups or even just for you, adding a supplement to the price of the trip.

Are children welcome on Portugal A2Z trips?

Yes, but we strongly advise to read carefully our programs and check if your kids are physically prepared.

If I'm travelling alone will you find me a roommate or can I have a private room?

Our prices are based on double room occupancy (two persons per room). If you would like a roommate, we often can pair you with one (of the same gender). If no roommate is available, then a single supplement will apply (check trip conditions).

Requests for single rooms will be confirmed at the time of reservation. Please note that in Europe single rooms are often smaller than double rooms.

Can I bring my own bike?

Yes, you can. If you choose to bring your own bike there will be no discount on the trip's price.

On Mountain Biking trips we recommend you to bring your own mountain bike.

How do I get the start of the trip? How will i get to the airport at the trip´s end?

After you reserve your trip you will receive this detailed information. This includes starting and ending times and locations, airport and hotel van transfer locations and transportation options.

Each trip begins and ends in or near a town accessible by plane, train or bus.

What are the cycling roads like?

Most of them are quiet backroads. Very rarely we will be riding on roads with some traffic and always with good road "shoulders".

Will the bike tours be challenging enough for experienced riders?

We think they are. Just look at the tour profile and pick the right one for you - on some of our Road Bike Tours we cover an average of 75km (47 miles) a day. And your guides can always find you some alternative routes to make you happy. We can customize the trip to meet your request.

On the other hand, the van is always around to pick you up if you had enough for the day. It's not a race!

What will people wear at dinner?

All of the places where we will have dinner are casual. No need to worry about it. We want you to relax!

Do I need a helmet?

Yes. Helmets are mandatory on our Road and Mountain Biking Tours. Bring your own or you can rent one for 25€ during the tour.

You can also buy a new one from us with the Portugal A2Z logos on it, that will be one more souvenir of the trip (on request).

How much should I tip my guides?

It is up to you, but the average is 100€ per guide/per person.

What do you recommend for accessing money?

The easiest (and cheapest) way to get money is by using your credit or debit card on an ATM.

How many bags can I bring?

Please limit your luggage to one medium-sized suitcase and one carry-on. Don't forget to mark your luggage with your name, address and phone number.

Do I need a passport?

A passport is required for travel to Europe. A visa is not required for U.S. and Canadian citizens provided you are staying in an European country less than 90 days. For travelling outside Europe, please contact us. We recommend that you make photocopies of your airline ticket and the first page of your passport. Bring one copy with you and keep it separate from the original documents. A scanned copy sent to your e-mail is the best backup for your docs and ID's.

Who pays for the wine?

Our tours do not include alcoholic drinks.

Can i buy wine and carry it or ship it back?

Each state or country has it's own laws on how much wine is allowed, but most airports (like in Portugal) let you carry 2 bottles per person.
