Step back in time and come discover the emblematic monuments of the Romanesque period. A journey of refinement and charm, always surrounded by a monumental landscape.

Get to know all the history of some of the most emblematic Romanesque monuments of the Tâmega and Sousa region, and travel back in time to the period of the foundation of Portugal. The monumental richness of the region shows the important role that the territory formerly played in the history of the nobility and religious orders in Portugal. These lands were inhabited by some of the most important noble families of the early days of our country, such as Ribadouro (from which descends Egas Moniz, the famous schoolmaster of D. Afonso Henriques), the Sousa or Sousões, and Baião. At the end of the day, the accommodations where you stay will be a real luxury!

Daily Itinerary

Day 01
Arrival to Lourido
Get the bus from Porto to Celorico de Basto (2h10).
Transfer from Celorico de Basto to Lourido.
Day 02
Cycling Tour 1: Lourido | Amarante (25 Km)
Along the banks of the Tâmega river, an old railway line, now converted into a bike path, it's the perfect way to see the vineyards. The Church of Gatão, along the route, is an important monument of the Romanesque. This is a region where green wine is produced, and the day ends in a great wine farm by the river, where you can taste the various green wines produced there.
Overnight in Amarante.
Day 03
Cycling Tour 2: Amarante | Santa Cruz do Douro (42 Km)
Amarante is the centre of this day. With a rich heritage, Amarante and its historic centre are situated on the banks of the river Tâmega and are known for the Church of S. Gonçalo and a bridge that was the scene of one of the most heroic episodes of the popular resistance to the Napoleonic wars.
You´ll be able to find the Monastery of Saint Andrew in Baião, situated on a hillside facing the river.
Overnight in Santa Cruz do Douro.
Day 04
Cycling Tour 3: Santa Cruz do Douro | Porto Antigo (33 Km)
On the way to your next destination, you will pass by Resende, known as the capital of Cherry.
Always with the Douro on our side, we follow by Caldas de Aregos, a thermal resort by the river.
Overnight in Porto Antigo.
Day 05
Cycling Tour 4: Porto Antigo | Entre-os-Rios (42 Km)
Following the Douro River, you can visit other monuments of the Route of the Romanesque: the Churches of Escamarão, Tarouquela and S. Christopher of Nogueira, always with amazing views over the river.
You´ll pass by Castelo de Paiva to find the Memorial of Sobrado, a funeral monument from the 13th century. The next destination will be Entre-os-Rios (which means between the rivers), where the Douro and Tâmega join. Here, you will find the São Miguel church.
Overnight in Entre-os-Rios.
Day 06
Cycling Tour 5: Entre-os-Rios | Paço de Sousa (48 Km)
Your journey to discover the Route of the Romanesque ends in Paço de Sousa, near Penafiel, in Solar Egas Moniz. This small 18th-century manor house is only meters away from the Monastery of the Saviour of Paço de Sousa. This is one of the important monuments of the Route, where Egas Moniz (schoolmaster of D. Afonso Henriques) is buried. S. Pedro de Cête monastery is another monument that we will find on this stage, an 11th-century monastery located in a verdant valley.
Overnight in Paço de Sousa.
Day 07
Cycling Tour 6: Paço de Sousa | Louredo (25 Km)
Leaving Paço de Sousa, the day ends in the Cozinha da Terra (Kitchen of the Earth), in Paredes, one of the most charismatic restaurants in the area, where all recipes keep the tradition in a unique way.
Overnight in Louredo.
Day 08
Departure
After breakfast, end of our services.
You can get the train from Paredes to Porto (about 40 min).
