5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
Walking Tour 3 - Porto de Mós | Batalha (10,2 km)
Leave Porto de Mós behind towards tiny but interesting villages inside the limestone natural park, such as Tojal de Cima, Palmeiros among other until reach Batalha, which is famous by the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, widely known as Batalha Monastery, a majestic building, declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Combining Manueline and Gothic styles, it was built from the 14th to the 16 th century to carry out the promise D. João I made to the Virgin in case he had a victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota, in 1385. Because it was a shorter walking route today, we have time to visit the Monastery and the opportunity to explore the village.
Overnight in Batalha.
Walking Tour 4 - Batalha | Fátima (19 km)
Your last day of hike will be a combination between the limestone landscapes and a portugueses hospitality on every coffee that you´ll find on the way. A quick stoppage in Reguengo de Fetal, a popular village famous by an annual event (between September and October) in honor of Nossa Senhora do Fetal. During those days, at 10 pm, the traditional and centuries-old candle processions and the lighting made with snails' shells will take place.
Then you´ll start to go up towards São Mamede village, but if you still have time try to visit the Grutas da Moeda, (Coin Caves), with galleries full of beautiful limestone formations.
You´ll reach Fátima, your final destination, with the famous worldwide Catholic pilgrimage site, home of Sister Lucia and her cousins, the three little Shepherds. To whom in 1917 the Virgin Mary appeared, in an event often referred to as the Miracle of the Sun. Home to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, it is a place of worship and faith, peaceful and deep. Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima and the Chapel of Apparitions, and may your soul find some peace at the end of this journey.
